Saturday, May 9 at 4 pm at Cincinnati Friends Meeting, 8075 Keller Rd.
A Mighty Stream antiracism group, an initiative of EquaSion, at Cincinnati Friends Meeting hosts Walter Naegle, Quaker activist Bayard Rustin’s partner, to learn about Bayard’s legacy of non-violent activism for Quakers and being an “angelic troublemaker.”
Bayard was a prominent leader in the civil- and gay-rights movements, organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, involved with the Freedom Rides and Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was an advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr. The couple met in 1977, bonding over interests in nonviolence and social justice.
Walter helped establish The Bayard Rustin Fund and, in 2013, accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House in Bayard’s honor. He co-wrote “Trouble Maker for Justice,” a young-adult book about Bayard.
Bayard’s message of promoting human rights through democratic processes is especially relevant “right now as all things are under assault,” according to Walter, and nudges Quakers to “speak truth to power,” a phrase credited to Bayard.
Walter will share video, a message about Bayard’s work and answer questions. A carry-in dinner will follow. Please join us for the talk and bring a dish to share to stay for dinner.
